Insight In the Scriptures.....is there anything I can use in these volumes?
by insearchoftruth inwhen i got home today i noticed another stack of stuff on the kitchen table, more wt garbage, including the english version of reasoning from the scriptures as well as a copy of insight in the scriptures that sister gave my wife.
my wife said she wanted to 'read the bible', i asked a simple question why she needed all the other books to accomplish that...she said just to provide her some assistance.
she was also stating today how it really does not matter how people interpret the scriptures, because there is only one correct interpretation....i wanted to get sick...... is there anything in these books, since they are from 1988, that i can use to my benefit....for example does it talk about the annointed and the generation where i could ask her to look it up as compared to the new light..... just wondering, may be reaching here, but anything would help!

All those books are is information that has been copied from other more scholarly material and filtered with a Watchtower message. Get her a generic readers digest bible encyclopedia and toss those things in the trash.

My Bishop shreads the "Salvayion is by works" bit in less then 5 minutes.
by A-Team injust came in from wednesday service, as we are going through the entire book of james.
this week, we are in chapter 2, and around verse 14, he mentions that "several people' got the following mixed up because they choose to focus in on one verse, but ignore everything around it.
anyways...starting at verse 14.....using the message version: (all emphasis are mine( .

Leaving disagreements between James and Paul about what Christianity means aside, i'd would point out one particular thing I think that is worth noting in regards to the Watchtowers 'faith through works' theology.
Remember that because the WTS views preaching that the end of the world is close as the most important message, this "work" becomes the work that trumps all others. So not only do they teach you need works, they give you a very short list to work from. -

How do I show her that 1914 and 607 is a bunch of crap with out showing her the book?
In two words.....
You can't!
You went through a 'crisis of faith', but those around you probably are not. What is important to you right now is not important to them. It's like trying to get your mom to like watching baseball on tv. Sure every once and a while somebody's mom somewhere is watching it, but chances are it's not yours.
You need to slow down and regroup. Think long term. All the JW cares about is that they have an answer from a book that explains it all. To them JW publications are all powerful and all knowing. There is no way in hell a JW is going to believe whatever you say over what the magazines and books say.
Your situation is part of a bigger problem than you realize. Just think about what you are doing. You are arguing over ancient mesopotamian history with your grandmother. Dude, like WTF?!?
The people who write those crappy magazines sit in their ivory tower and answer to nobody (including other scholars who are experts on the issue). Instead they leave all the debate to be taken up by you and your grandma. See how screwed up that is? -

by Witness 007 inyes it's not offical but witnesses here are saying that gas prices and increased cost of living show that armagedon is sooooo close.....haven't they heard of world war 1 and 2 when people didn't have sugar, gas, coffee or anything?
armagedon didn't come....we bounced back.
china in the 1920's and ukraine during the war people "hunted" children to eat!

Americans finally have to deal with high energy prices like the rest of the world has for decades.
I mean, we are just so close now... -

Welcome to the board!
You will continue to be amazed at how much you really still hold on to more and more. Leaving it all takes some hard work for a good number of people.

What was wrong with the 'occultic green' bibles?
by Gill inwhat was wrong with the 'green bible'?.
i understand (rightly or wrongly) that the 'green' had occult connotations that some did not approve of.. is this true and were the early jws too involved with hidden, esoteric, occult meaning that 'others' found uncomfortable and so they had to go to the sobre black bibles?.

I've heard some old tapes by ex-jw born agains who call it the 'green phantom'. Seemed to me that those were the only type of people who ever really made a deal out of the color of the NWT.

Can you get disfellowshipped for anything?
by Solace1998 incant the elders make it so that any deviation or any thought could be considered "loose conduct" and therefore a disfellowshipping offense?

I agree with jgnat, it's who you are in the social environment. It also depends upon the type of men in charge. I know one Elder was PO when his daughter was DF'd. He is a very rigid 'company man' with very little personal expression. He simply follows rules and could care less who gets in the way, even if it was his own kids. Other Elders (or more 'normal' ones) would be much more likely to try and get their friends, children, and family a break. I would also say that showing respect for the "authority" of the Elders is a big deal. Elders do not take well anything that seems to be a threat to their authority. It wasn't until my JC that I noticed how much those Elders really thought of themselves and their position of Elder.
